IMPORTANT CONVERSATIONS

For the past few days, I’ve been reflecting, reading, praying, and processing.

I didn’t know what to do or what to say. Honestly, I didn’t know if I even wanted to do a post on this topic. I didn’t feel like I have the right to say anything.

However, I think not saying anything is just as bad, if not worse. And I cannot stay silent and passive while terrible things are happening.

So I’m just going to do what I always do on here, I’m going to speak from the heart.

I am heartbroken.

The murder of George Floyd makes me sick. The murder of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and many others make me sick. The heartache and injustice that our black brothers and sisters have experienced and continue to experience makes me cry.

I will never fully understand, I know that. But I am committed to learn more and stand with my brothers and sisters.

I’ve also been wrestling the past couple of days of what my response should be as a Christ follower. I’ve been praying and reading and digesting… and I’ll share with you some of the things I’ve come across and realized.

“Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.” - Ephesians 5:11.

The Apostle Paul says that we, as Believers, should expose darkness and evil in the world. We cannot be ignorant to racism and injustice that is happening in the world. Silence is not the answer. Ignorance is a sin.

Not only that, can we also talk about how Jesus also calls us to LOVE one another. I remember singing that Sunday school song: Jesus loves the little children, ALL THE CHILDREN OF THE WORLD. How are we teaching children to love others, when we can’t do that ourselves?

I’ve been learning more about systemic racism these past couple of days and the biases that are ingrained in our society, including those in our Asian culture. In teacher’s college we learned a lot about modelling and how that’s incredibly important for our students. They learn through watching what we as teachers do. The same goes for the younger generations, those of you who have children. Our words, our action or lack thereof speaks loud to the younger generation. And I know that there are things that are just ingrained & hard to uproot, but we have to TRY moving that needle so that the future generations will be better.

So I’m calling on my brothers and sisters in Christ to be proactive, to learn, to respond to injustice, to stand alongside and to love on our brothers and sisters.

One of the reasons I started this blog was not only to share what’s on my heart, but use it as a platform to be a blessing to others.

So I want to do that. I personally want to and am committed to learn and I want others, you reading this, to come and learn with me.

I’ve asked two of my friends, two amazing Black Canadian gals to write and share their perspectives on this issue. I know I won’t fully understand, but I can try to learn. I am so so so grateful that they have taken the time to write about their own views and struggles with this issue. As well, they’ve helped me compile a list of resources that we can take a look at, along with some organizations that you can consider if you would like to donate to a cause.

Thank you again for reading this.

Special thank you to Tashana & Onika. I am so grateful to have friends like you who are willing to be vulnerable and share your life, your story, your perspective so we, I, can get a little better insight and be more understanding.
