Dad's Coffee Adventures in Bangkok, Thailand

Coffee.

Some people LOVE the stuff. Others, not so much.

Where do I fall into this category? I’d say I would fit right in the middle. I don’t mind it and I drink it occasionally. However, I do not need to drink it to get through my day nor do I usually crave it when I don’t have access to it.

This might offend some of you coffee lovers, but I’m usually more of a tea person. We have a coffee machine at home (not your fancy coffee/espresso machine) and for the longest time I had NO CLUE how to even use it. It’s stored in my basement and only used when someone who does drink coffee come to visit us. Before you disregard this post entirely because of my lack of coffee knowledge/drinking, please note that I do know how to use it now.

Recently though I have been drinking more coffee. I blame 1) EY for really kickstarting the coffee drinking (hello busy season) 2) Australia for making me more of a coffee snob because as a non-coffee drinker, I can tell the coffee there is a gagillion times better. And because it was so good, I drank coffee there every single day. That’s right every. single. day. 3) This pandemic is turning me into a dalgona coffee drinker. I drink it at least every other day.

Anyways I digress from this post…

Although my family and I are not coffee drinkers, we do occasionally drink it. This is especially true when we’re travelling. Last summer, we got to go to Thailand and Vietnam to visit my cousin and her family. Let me tell you my friends, the coffee culture in there is so much better than here (no offence). They have so many different gourmet and boutique coffee places, where in a lot of cafes they roast and/or grind their own beans. My dad went about two weeks earlier than Jen and I to Bangkok and he went to TEN different cafes when he was there. That’s right, ten. All different places and he re-visited some of those places too.

So what is this post really about?

Well, I wanted to share with you some of the places that he went and then tell you his top pick out of the ten places. This way, if you’re ever going to Bangkok you’ll know exactly where to go to get a good cup of coffee.

Now I know you coffee drinkers out there who are reading this are now saying, how can I trust your judgement when you don’t even really drink coffee. Well, my cousin who lived there at the time is a big coffee drinker and picked out these places for my dad to try out. I’ll also let you know which one she selected as her top 2 favourite places in addition to my dad’s pick!

Here is the cafe/COFFEE SHops roundup:

  1. Toby’s at Sukhumvit Soi 38

  2. The Dark at Piman, Sukhumvit Soi 49

  3. Red Diamond at Pradit Manutham

  4. Karo Coffee Roasters, Sukhumvit Soi 66

  5. Plearnwan Panich at Soi Sukhumvit 63

  6. TWG At Emporium Mall

  7. Kanom at Sukhumvit Soi 49

  8. The Coffee Club at Thonglor

  9. Thames Valley Cafe at Khao Yai (this one is outside of Bangkok)

  10. Starbucks (Couple of times at Sukhumvit 63 Ekkamai)

So what’s the verdict?

Out of the 10, my dad has concluded that Karo Coffee Roasters has taken the top spot! On top of that, my cousin has also put Karo at number one, with Red Diamond following behind for the number 2 spot.

I actually got to try some of these coffee shops when I was there and I do have to say that I completely agree with their choice. Karo is this quaint little coffee shop with not only really good coffee, but had really great baked goods as well! Not to mention the owner and the staff working there were so friendly!

So if you’re planning to go to Bangkok when travel resumes again, make sure you go visit Karo and some of the other places on this list!

Let me know if there are any other places you’ve tried or if you have been to any of the places listed above!!

Sending love,
Kim
